Mark Powell

Born in Illinois, and currently based in Mexico City, photographer Mark Powell document his every day life while simultaneously exploring the complex relationship between photography and memory, subject and object. Witnesses to an American Dream gone astray, the portraits and landscapes of Powell evoke Walt Whitman’s ‘American Project’: the construction of a great American poem through the images of those who inhabit it, the things that compose it, and the longing – in the words of Susan Sontag – to be one with the photographed object, to uncover the deep (and equally elusive) beauty inherent to each and every one of them.
