Cate Blanchett takes the lead in Woody Allen’s immensely enjoyable new film. It details Jasmine’s (Cate Blanchett) fall from New York’s glittering social scene when her husband (Alec Baldwin) is convicted of grand larceny. She is forced to live with her adopted sister (Sally Hawkins) in a poor San Francisco district. Allen’s wit contrasts sharply with the pathos of Jasmine’s predicament, which resonates with the fissures in contemporary America’s economic divide. Woody Allen at his best!
