Since the mid-1980s, Maurizio Cattelan has been internationally recognized for his humorous and ironic works, which reflect upon the problematic nature of the relationship between art and life.

Cattelan was born in Padua, Italy in 1960, and lives and works in New York City. His work has been exhibited internationally at the Museum Fridericianum, Kassel; ARC/Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; Castello di Rivoli, Turin; the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Museu d’Art Contemporàni, Barcelona. Cattelan has also participated in numerous international exhibitions such as the 1993 Venice Biennale, the 1997 Venice Biennale (as a representative of the Italian Pavilion with Enzo Cucchi and Ettore Spalletti), the 1999 Venice Biennale, the 1997 Site Santa Fe, and the 1999 Istanbul Biennial.
