Artist Julie Mehretu, born to an Ethiopian father and American mother in Addis Ababa. The family emigrated to Michigan where she studied at Kalamazoo College in 1992 followed by a visit to Cheik Anta Diop University in Dakar before achieving an M.F.A from Rhode Island School of Design in 1997.
The three painting shown here are from the series, City Sitings. One really gets the sense of her experiences as a citizen of the world and of the city.
Combining maps, urban grids, and architectural renderings to articulate complex social and geopolitical structures. The immense proportions, organic layering, and careful detail convey the complexities of the urban environment.
