Andreas Blank

Sourcing blocks of precious stone from quarries all over the world Andreas Blank carves them into contemporary subject matter creating deceptively realistic ordinary scenes. In precise sculptures everyday objects such as a shirt or briefcase, made entirely from alabaster and marble, achieve monumental permanence. The materials meanwhile, historically used in classical sculpture, acquire a seemingly casual and fragmentary character. Blank subverts traditional ideals and values and calls into question the memorial function of stone-sculpture in general.
