For some considerable time Akos Birkás’s paintings, constructed in diptychs, evoked “heads” (Köpfbilder) in simple oval forms (more than 200 of them), often on the scale of the body, which by the horizon of 2000 had become veritable portraits suggesting the apparent symmetry of the human figure as much as the schizophrenic possibilities of the personality. Some years later, these portraits are projecting into the space of a painting in panoramic format. This development has been pursued up to the present time, with the figure being taken into account in its dimension as a social actor, and the painting becoming more akin to a film still or more specifically linked to the context of current (and sometimes burning) issues.
