I'm a huge Japanophile: if there's one other place I'd like to live, it's Tokyo. I must have been there seven or eight times, most recently just after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Anyway, EN is a gem on Hudson Street, serving real Japanese cuisine. It turns out that EN is a chain in Japan; there are a lot of branches making lovely bosky food in cosy neighbourhood locations. But their New York incarnation is grand in scale and ambition, with solid, warm interiors (not unlike if the Whitney were a Japanese restaurant, oddly) - a remarkable hybrid of this city, and the other one that I'd love to live in.

London / Art

My favourite library when I was a student, I still love to wander and look up to its Renaissance sculptures.

Munich / Museum

Just by walking through the column range you can sense what power means. A feeling that increases once you step in : everything is constructed so solid and out of proportions. But if you go on the back side of the building, this general impression will be disturbed. Looking up, you will notice that the stone columns are reinforced by bamboos fixed by Chinese vases. The hole facade looks like it is doing some exercise...It’s looks so funny. (actually, whilst invited for an exhibition Ai Wei Wei did judge that the building seems to fall apart and that it needs a bit of reinforcement...) I love it.

Melbourne / Restaurant

This Hare Krishna restaurant has a rotating menu of delicious, inexpensive vegetarian food. The atmosphere is always peaceful and the perfect place to sit is by the window overlooking Swanston St. I recommend the eggplant lasagne if you see it in the window display!

New York / Bookstore

Berlin / Restaurant

One of my favorite sophisticated-but-casual places in Berlin. Everything is delicious and the restaurant is cozy and minimal at the same time. It is the right place to have a wonderful dinner with somebody special without being too anxious about the dress code :)

The Hague / Attraction

In 1618 Jan van de Velde II made “Gezicht op de Hofvijver in Den Haag”, with people ice skating and having fun on ice.

Rovinj / Village

When most people think of Croatia, they think of southern Croatia, areas near Split and Dubrovnik. In 2015, I went to Istria in northern Croatia where the tourism isn't as widely settled yet. Of course, there's still some tourism going on, but there's a different, more genuine feeling to Istria. And if you dig in to their history, you will notice there's so much Istria can tell you. Rovinj is a small city located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, a popular tourist resort, an active fishing port and definitely one of the most picturesque cities around the Mediterranean. Hop on to a boat from Pula and visit Rovinj for a day tour, or spend a night in the town at a private accommodation. Stroll around the narrow alleys and just enjoy all the pastel architecture. Then, I can recommend having some local sea food for dinner, which is the Adriatic speciality.

I came alone and walked up an unassuming flight of stairs to the second floor that opened onto a narrow hallway with a reception desk. Before arriving at the Room, I could already sense the rich smell of damp earth that permeated the space.

Lancaster / Shop

Local bike parts/repair shop. Tom, the owner, is always helpful and willing to share his expertise.

New York / Attraction

The best part of the new Whitney Museum is the view in all directions from the terrace - and also from the staircase facing West. I'm afraid it upstages the Art.

Antwerp / Shop

St. Vincents curates a careful edit of furniture, art and design from niche and established creatives, designers, artists and artisans. Really nice place

Joanne Hummel Newell (b 1982) studied at Kingston University London from 2001 - 2004 and at The Royal College of Art, London, from 2004 -2006. Recent selected exhibitions and short lists include WW Gallery collateral exhibition at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Jerwood Drawing Prize, RA Summer Exhibition, Royal Watercolour Society Contemporary Competition, Shoosmiths Art Prize, The Other Art Fair London and Art MUC Munich with Folly and muse Gallery. I travel a lot and always make work in the places I visit. I often turn my attention towards architecture in order to examine the identity of the places I visit. I work intuitively in a documentary manner as it allows me more in depth involvement with my subject. I only use film/analogue processes, mainly mediaum and large formats. These are preferred as they are more precise and slower and aenable me to take time over the composition, to produce a more thoughtful and deliberate image, as compared with the snapshot/hit and run type of photography.
