Great selection of design / illustration books

Jardin du Palis-Royal - 1780 Secret place. Between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde, a wonderful french-style garden. In the 1780’s, Philippe IV of Orleans (later named “Philippe Egalité” ) acquired the whole place. Extravagant and overly indebted, he decided to build shops around his gardens and rent them out. Convinced by the idea of having a theatre, the Duke thus decided to build the “Comédie française”.

Ottawa / Gallery

Artengine is a local arts group that produces technologically based presentations. As part of their Electric Fields program, I recently attended Swim Sound – a sound performance at a municipal pool. A percussionist played on a floating platform, while a knob twiddler tweaked and tweezed the inputs coming from drum mics and a couple underwater mics. Too fun with an encore performance possibly happening in the spring!

Brighton / Attraction

Every November the famous Brighton Pavilion develop part of their Gardens into an Ice Rink. Its lit up beautifully of an evening and runs right through until the end of January.

London / Shop

Always make the effort to head to Goodhood to check the latest street wear and homeware from around the globe. Ahead of the game for curation of brands and items. Highly recommend.

New York / Shop

One of my all time favorite shops. They have amazing succulents at reasonable prices. It's always a pleasure to stop in and see what they've got that day. Ched, the owner, is not only extremely knowledgeable but totally hilarious. Every plant has been personalized and anthropomorphized.

Dubai / Beach

I rate the kite surfing beach by far the best public beach in Dubai, as it has lots of facilities around including volleyball nets, football AstroTurf, bathrooms, kite surfing equipment, etc. It has a really large span of beach and not much construction around, which is rare for the city.

New York / Restaurant

Lovely Italian restaurant with a beautiful backyard. I usually have the Orecchiette Salsiccia Broccoli or the spaghetti Vongole.

Los Angeles / Restaurant

Part restaurant, part market, part publication, Botanica is a lively space in LA’s Silver Lake neighborhood. We converted the former drop ceiling liquor store by peeling the space back to its original shell and opening up the back wall and patio creating a space that reflects their personality and cooking – bright, lively and communal.

Oslo / Gallery

Design and Architecture centre in Oslo. They have some quite cool professional exhibitions here as well as student graduate exhibitions. It’s a really nice building (which you would kind of expect) right next to the river that divides the east and west of Oslo.

Milan / Bar

Tiny wine bar and store in Milan's Chinatown area, selling wine by the bottle and by the glass, alongside small plates/snacks. Friendly staff and great selection of wine. Always popular so be prepared to stand!

New York / Restaurant

My favorite restaurant in Manhattan, it's super fresh, vegan/vegetarian and tasty and the staff is wonderful.

Michael is a designer who has worked in New York since 2000. After leaving behind the bayous of Louisiana for NYC he received a masters degree in architecture from Columbia University. After school he began teaching and started SOFTlab, a design studio that is a unique blend of designers, artists, architects and educators who approach every project from a fresh perspective to create rich spatial, graphic, interactive and visual experiences. One of my most emotional periods in my life because of the people and the discussion about architecture. At the moment I am working for Schneider+Schumacher architects in Frankfurt am Main. Currently I don`t have really a home town, I am spending time between many cities. For the moment I like this situation to be more independent.
