One day when I was walking around in the hills behind my house, I happened upon this bizarre street. It was as though someone had taken postmodernism and tried to make it into a block of houses. Each one has its own internally complete theme, involving strange colors and sculptural elements attached to the outside walls (gold eggs, wisps of wrought iron). This led me on subsequent walks to name them: the Corbusier House, the Barn, the Preschool Blocks house, the House of Wicca… and so on.

A good surprise down the lane - used to hang out with childhood friends here a lot before the commercial development made the area touristy. So happy to spot this independent coffee during a brief stay in Beijing. Cozy space, and impressively diversified line-up of single origin coffee beans, quite neat! 

Cinema with original fifties interior, close to Hermann Platz. Like all cinemas from the York Cinema Group in Berlin, it features a diverse program of independent movies (mostly original versions with German subtitles).

You enter La Fidelity and will find a very classic Parisian Brasserie, probably almost empty. Maybe one or two people at the bar. In the middle of this place you will find the stairs that go down to the cave. Have fun!

A lovely park along the bay in the Mimo area of Miami. Lots of open spaces, enormous mature banyan trees that provide lots of shade and a creek full of crabs and little creatures that scurry about. Plus it has these amazing trees that appear to also be part vine. They are pretty magical looking, full of texture and great for art inspiration. 

Anafiotika is a small neighborhood located on the northeastern side of the Acropolis hill in Athens, Greece. In 1963, the Italian-born sculptor Costantino Nivola filled a playground that covers an entire city block with avant-garde abstractions. In the middle of an Upper Manhattan housing project, there are cuboid cutouts sculpted in cement, a fountain made with two diamond-shaped boulders, concrete play horses, and a sand-casted relief carved high into a wall. In the northeast corner, a matriarchal figure known as “The Nanny” rises from the ground. The artist’s sculptures were built in an era when urban development incorporated art in its effort to uplift communities and express democratic ideals. “A work designed for a public space is less a work of art than a civic act,” Nivola once said. “It concerns the ways in which we live together, and in which we influence each other.”

Truly independent and informed programming twinned with a beautiful Art Deco façade makes the Rio a genuinely unique and unpretentious cinema. A stalwart of Kingsland High Street the Rio’s single screen shows new releases, classic and quirky Sunday double bills and hosts special events and film festivals.

This place has one of the hottest rooms I've ever been in. The combination of barely being able to breathe from the heat to immediately jumping into a freezing murky pool is addictive. There's also a great roof patio for a change of scenery. A good old school New York spot.

Next to the school of fine arts, this vintage bistro throws away: cement tiles, hanging globes and naked bulbs, bar, benches and bistro chairs, etc. On the plate, there are good seasonal products worked with care: celery cooked like a risotto and foie gras, grilled red tuna with roasted beets ...
