Copenhagen / Street

An area in Copenhagen that has gotten quite a lot of attention because of its experimental public space and planning is Superkilen, a park in the north west of the city centre. Designed in a collaboration between the arts group Supeflex, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Topotek1, this park feature an eclectic mix of features, such as a fountain from Morocco, sculptures from Japan and large scale Russian signs. The area this park is located in, Nørrebro, is quite diverse, and the designers set out to reflect this by treating the park as ‘a world exhibition filled with interesting things’, and to represent the nationalities of every local resident. The park is divided into three areas: The Red Square, The Black Market and the Green Park. The Red Square is decorated with red-toned geometric patterns, contains cafés and feels modern and urban. The Black Markets’ ground are painted with white lines that creates almost aerodynamic patterns that curve around the benches and fountain. The Green park is a park for walking the dog, picnics and sports. Bring your camera as this area offers some great photo opportunities!

Marc Philip van Kempen (1979) is a Dutch artist living in Amsterdam and Berlin. Much of his practice consists out of life-sized threedimensional reconstructions of media images that result in a kind of ‘spatial collage’. Brought up in the Cotswolds, Oliver began his photographic education studying photography at the renowned course at Filton Technical College in Bristol. He went on to study film and television at the London College of Printing and has been balancing work in stills and moving image ever since. His first solo exhibition entitled Volte-face will premier at London's Royal Geographical Society in September 2016. Taken over a period of four years, Volte-face is a series of images taken at the world’s most photographed historic sites, buildings and monuments - but looking away from them. To coincide with the exhibition at the RGS a book of the project, featuring an essay by Geoff Dyer, will be published by Dewi Lewis Publishing Ltd. Oliver continues to produce stills portraiture for major broadcasters as well as generating his own projects for exhibition and publication. He cites as key influences William Eggleston, Saul Leiter and Andre Kertesz. He continues to plough a distinctly idiosyncratic path as Director of Photography on feature films as diverse as Clare Kilner’s The Wedding Date, Frank Oz’s Death At A Funeral and Joanna Hogg’s Unrelated as well as experimental gallery-based installations such as Gideon Koppel’s Borth. He remains in great demand worldwide shooting commercials for high profile clients such as Pantene, L’Oreal, La Perla, Ferragamo, Palmolive, Rimmel, Coca Cola, Sony, Guinness, Canon and Cadbury’s.

My works can be described as ‘post-graffiti art’. The approach, attitude and application of my designs are heavily influenced by graffiti and street art. I am fascinated by today’s zeitgeist but am also critical about it. Street art is an art movement in which many inspiring things are happening and where I feel at home. With a spray I can visually express what I cannot do with a pencil. However, I would like to go deeper than the sometimes superficial appearance of graffiti and street art and highlight those aspects that make the viewer think. I would like to express my thoughts visually, either in a clear statement or in an experiment with a still unknown outcome, which can lead to something new.
