A hutong is a type of narrow street or alley most commonly associated with Beijing. Since the mid-20th century, the number of Beijing hutongs has dramatically decreased as they are facing demolition to make way for new roads and buildings. More recently, some hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history. I love walking around the hutongs when I need a break from the office (my current office is located in a particularly interesting hutong neighbourhood); they are a great exemplar of ancient urban planning and architecture, and breathe "the old way of life".

I love the smell of this bookshop. On my first visit I felt like an explorer making a major archeological discovery. There is a basement, which you get to via a spiral staircase. I am convinced that behind one of the floor to ceiling books shelves is a secret room that opens up by sliding out a secret book from a shelf.

Aaron Moran grew up in the Fraser Valley about an hour East of Vancouver. He spends his time exploring the urban and rural alike, simultaneously drawing inspiration from urban decay and natural geography. He received his BFA from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2007 and studied Film & Video at Simon Fraser University. His works span sculpture, painting, printmaking and assemblage, with careful attention to the use of reclaimed source materials.
