I vaguely thought about leaving London recently and the British Library came to mind as somewhere I’d miss. It’s an essential resource because it has almost everything. It also has some interesting exhibitions.

Located one block east of the historic Water Tower, the MCA champions the provocative side of contemporary art and culture. Their innovative exhibitions, performances, and programs are made to inspire. Founded in 1967 as a Kunsthalle (or non-collecting art gallery) the MCA is now one of the world’s largest museums dedicated to art since 1945. Since their inception, it has been their mission to exhibit new and experimental work artists in all media and to paired these with ambitious education programs. In 1974, the MCA expanded their mission to include collecting and preserving contemporary art for future generations with the inauguration of a permanent collection that has grown to include more than 2,000 works. After 29 years in a storefront on Ontario Street, the museum moved to their current location in 1996, giving their collection, exhibitions, and programming room to grow to meet the needs of 21st-century art and audiences.

Offbeat antique stores with unique, eclectic collections abound in the rural Midwest, and although I often head to smaller towns off the beaten path to look for antiques, I usually find some good stuff at the Lawrence Antique Mall. I’m always on the lookout for taxidermy…

The V and A houses a public collection of prints and drawings of every kind imagineable from old master drawings to photographs, playing cards, fashion plates and wallpapers. Cashbox is a chained karaoke business. Unlike the karaoke in Europe, usually located in pubs, for people who are brave enough to sing in front of other strangers. In Cashbox, we show up as a group of friends, we have our own room with screen, computer, and microphones. We order whatever songs we like from the computer, then the music videos show up on the screen and we sing along! It’s a great place for relieving pressure.

The best way to enjoy Manhattan is from Brooklyn. Transmitter Park offers views without the crowds, and you can pick up coffee-to-go and treats from nearby Ovenly. The India St/Greenpoint Ferry is a 5 minute walk and will take you all the way to the Rockaways in the Summertime.

Beautiful cemetery from the mid 1700s, good for reading/sketching in private. One of many that I visit. Some of the last places to find peace.
